K-12 Art Instructor - Jess Kautz

Your student is in art!!! Don't panic. It is a really great place to be. We are really lucky to have amazing supplies and equipment to work with in our art room. There is room for success for everyone in Art Class. My policy is that if you are working, trying and showing me effort, you will get and A. I will never grade projects on artistic ability. Students will often surprise themselves with their art when they put in the work.

I am working to bring more STEAM (Science, technology, engineering, art, and math) into the classroom. A large part of STEAM is being able to be creative and express ideas visually. We want to give the students in Hill City the opportunity to express ideas and concepts through art.

We have added some great features in the last couple of years.

20 Samsung Tablets for Digital Drawing, Photography and Research (for STEAM)

Epson Color Photo Printer

A 18" Printing Press for printmaking

A large-scale printer for posters and digital projects (for STEAM)

3D Drawing Pens (for STEAM)

A Cricut 3 (for STEAM)

I grew up in a small rural town of Lake Wilson in Southwest Minnesota.

I got my fine arts BA from Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall Minnesota

I returned to SMSU later to get my K-12 Art Education BA

I have been teaching art classes for 15+ years. This is my third-year teaching in the school systems and all of those years have been in Hill City. I can’t imagine teaching in any other school.

I love teaching in Hill City.  We have the best kids, faculty, and community to work in. I always feels supported, even when I ask for some very strange art project items. It is great to work in a community that supports the students and arts.  If you are curious to see what we are up to in the art room check out our Instagram page @ranger.artists

At the high school I am working to build the Art Club and the School Yearbook.

I live in Rapid City with my husband and daughters, Matt, Addy (3) and Izzy (10 months). We also have a 7-year-old Brittany Spaniel, Annie. In my free time (what's that?) you can find me in my home studio. I teach art classes at the DAHL art center in Rapid on Saturdays and during the summer months. You can also find me selling my art at Art Festivals during the summer. Stop by Spearfish Arts in the Park and say hi.
